About Us
History
In late 1998, the madresa was established by family elders who saw a strong need for their children to have basics of their culture and belonging. From humble beginning in a friend's garage then to a modest hall generously donated for use by the Almanar Trust. Students from Ethiopia, Eritrea and other ethnic backgrounds flock to the center to receive different lessons from community elders. Nejashi Community Trust registered in Ministry of social development in 2005 to address the community issues in a better and organized way.
Today
Class runs with a strong mix of ethnic groups. More than 55 boys and girls aged between 7 and 20 attend classes. On Saturday, more than 20 women attend ladies classes. On Saturday evenings the men gather to run their lessons as well. The events and affairs that concern the community are raised and debated according to our values. Guest speakers from the neighboring centers and abroad regularly visit the classes.
Guest from Australia, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other regions of the glob have graced the community. Our community has gathered strong recognition from multiethnic groups around New Zealand. A strong relationship building campaign is being constantly revisited.
The Future
Although our community is grateful for the progress it has made so far, there are many challenges that exist within the community. As the number and the age of students increase, their need for an effective way of learning is compromised as the resources we have are still limited. Our main ambition is to have our own centre where we feel comfortable and have more activities that accommodate our students's needs and the rest of community as a whole to comprehend the beauty of Islam.
